AUTUMN CLEAN UP OF VILLAGE STREAM

SATURDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2003 - 10 am. to 1 pm.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED to help with the village autumn clean. Following the success of last years clean up – the leaves had all dropped by late November and after we had removed them from the stream it stayed clear all winter – we have again set a late November date.   We aim to remove dead leaves from the stream adjacent to the main road through Longparish, cut down brambles and stinging nettles from the banks and remove any overhanging branches which could drop leaves into the stream.   We will take away all debris to stop the spread of the stinging nettles and weeds.

Please could volunteers remain on the road side of the stream as we have water voles along both sides of the stream.   As these aquatic mammals are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 we do not want to disturb their burrows on the far side of the stream by walking on top of them, or dumping debris on top of the far bank.   It is hoped that by working from the road bank or wading in the water we can clear the stream.   Please do not remove all vegetation from the water on the far side of the stream, or cut the vegetation below 15 cms on the far bank as the voles use the vegetation as food and also need ground cover to protect them from predators.

We also plan to cut back the brambles pushing through the fence opposite the stream as the brambles make it difficult to walk along the road.   This will make the walk safer for school children.   Please bring along your own equipment such as rakes, pruning saws and secateurs.   Wellington boots, gloves and hats are also recommended.

If you would prefer a country walk, Ricky Bourne is organising a litter pick up along the main roads in the morning.   The Parish Council has recently purchased some litter pickers which means you will not have to bend down or get your hands dirty!   Please call Ricky on 720500 if you would like to help with this – ideally we need four pairs of helpers to cover all the main roads through the village.

FREE LIGHT LUNCH OF SANDWICHES AND CHIPS AT THE CRICKETERS FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS!    Buy your own drinks and please leave dirty boots in the new porch.

CHILDREN ALSO WELCOME TO HELP UNDER PARENTAL SUPERVISION.
